CORRESPONDENCES
a film by Robert Fenz

This project is intended as a kind of elegy for a particular kind of image-making that is in the process of disappearing. Robert Gardner is one of the last great practitioners of this artistic tradition. Fenz's film will be an artifact that is itself an act of preservation while breathing new life into archival sounds. Correspondences will not be a straightforward essay on Robert Gardners's body of work. In addition to reflecting on these films, Fenz opens himself to the direct impact of 'intention, circumstances and chance' as discovered in the present. The overarching formal concern will center on the ability of black-and-white film to trigger memory by referring to Gardner's previously recorded events, places and peoples. A central goal in this project is to bring greater understanding and visibility to the body of Gardner's non-fiction film.
